Hello.

Brand new noobie here.

I have just gotten and started Freelancer. And am also
an old fan of the privateer series.(still have both on orig. disk)

I am looking to find out if there are any Utility apps for this game.

Such as , A model viewer,A file extractor, Mixer,

Anything I can use to maybe view, alter, modify game models, animations, skins etc of game files, models, characters, change textures, emitters etc..

any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
QH

alot of peple here use milkshape. i personally dont know of anyother program but you start with that. then if you want to edit other stuff i suggest you check out the sdk 1.3 and sdk 1.5 all in the download section. there are other patches also located in the downloads section.

You want too much.

For model editing there is a bunch:
From FL: Milkshape + plugins > 3DSMax
To FL: 3DSMax > Milkshape + plugins > HardCMP
Speed ship creating tutorial here

For textures:
Replacing in UTF editor. Format - DDS. You need Photoshop + nvidia DSS plugin.

For ini coding: Freelancer SDK + notepad.

Pull up a chair and take a look around the modelling, coding, tutorial sections etc of the forums, you can find out pretty much how to do everything but you're going to have to spend a little time reading first. There's a handy little search box top left as well, could prove helpful. It's not really rocket science to mod freelancer, but there's no point knowing which tools you need unless you have the knowledge to use them. Take your time.

comparing everyone's paintings with the creations of an experienced photoshop user is lol.
the program is genius but the basic features most of us will use for texturing (excluding the probability of using texture resources) are present in other programs, too, partially even easier to find and use. its just like comparing the notepad with microsoft word. ofc theyre incomparable, word offers much, much more but if you want to note down a few lines the notepad is even better, faster to get used to for unexperienced users.

For modding you might want to check out the wiki as well:

Well thank you all for replying.

I do have experience in modifying game "stuff"

Just wanted to know what the apps were..

And it seems I have found the place.

---curious as to why replies did not generate an email notice----

Now I got to learn this Forum, used to vBulletin and others.

Might be a link to this around here somewhere..buried, but here's a quick link to a pretty full archive of the most commonly used stuff:

http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/downloads/flmt-20-beta-5

Likely there will be things not included as it's from December 2009, but those should be lurking around here after you have an idea of which you need.

There are still quite a few things the community is uncovering, so new tools will pop up, but those included will do what is needed.

Just a side note: Milkshape is a must if you're doing im/exporting. That's the only gfx program anyone has bothered to write the proper plug-ins for. For your main modeling, 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, Lightwave, Softimage, or Wings 3D all work well and can export OBJ (preferred) or 3DS files which Milkshape can then work with to export a CMP or 3DB.

No. I don't need an X Gb monster program to just change color in ARGB image. I'll use gimp for that.

Changing color balance and drawing a texture is a little bit different things right? PS has the filters and layer mixing modes which extremely useful in texture drawing.

Photoshop is overkill. There are free versions of Paint Shop Pro around that do all this
