I'm not personally interested in running it under Steam, but I don't want to stop anyone else from doing so. Can you provide the crash address? (Look in Event Viewer's Application Logs.)

There's also Match Job, which will dynamically adjust the level to match the player. (However, any assistance provided will still use the original levels, so they probably won't last long and you'll still be on your own.)

I tried a mission in New York and did get assistance, but they were still Level 2. I expect in SP you could use Match Player to fix it, as that adjusts the system as a whole; I'm afraid I'm not too bothered to look into it for MP.

It doesn't look like sort is used (the only sort string present in the binaries seems to be related to Lua/Thorn).

JFLP is the best option if you want widescreen support (Freelancer actively restricts to 4:3).

It ignores CriticalWarningFn if it hasn't been set. The critical warning occurs when DirectSound or DirectPlay fail to initialize.

Download comdlg32, extract it and run register - allow access and then it should tell you it was registered - now FLED Thorn should work.

Mine's command line, so you need to use it through Command Prompt (tip: type the first couple of characters of file and directory names, then TAB to cycle through the complete names):
