You know there's a much better exporter for 3ds Max, right? Milkshape is a terrible way to make models for FL.

Yeah, it's the individual object matrices which become denormalized. If you perform all the calculations and rendering in camera space instead of world space (by moving everything so the camera is at the origin before rendering the frame, then reverting all that after rendering), you already get a noticeably lower amount of shaking for the exact same inputs. The rest of the shaking is probably caused by the positions themselves becoming inaccurate.

Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to do that space transformation for everything (specifically, it breaks ALEs and I believe stars), so it's not currently viable.

No, there's no work on this and it's unlikely there will ever be a fix.

The DirectPlay auto-install stopped working at some point (Windows used to prompt you to install DP, but it doesn't seem to do so consistently anymore), so that's usually it. No-CD is also a necessity since SecuROM is blocked by the OS.

You just need to enable DirectPlay and get the no-cd patch (which should still be in the downloads here). If that doesn't work, maybe something like JFLP will help, but I'd get those first two done first.

I'm not saying it's not a potential concern, but between wider and wider use of NAT and IP exhaustion coming largely from mobile devices and IoT, there are ways to handle it without removing IPv4 from regular ISPs.

Home internet won't lose IPv4 until it's absolutely unavoidable, and FL's gonna be long dead by then.

There's nothing pointing towards IPV4 disappearing anytime soon, so that entire worry is unwarranted.

You can absolutely do that yeah. Dying just loses you your current cargo, the game isn't really harsh.

You can use it to make a local server to play with friends on, but Freelancer doesn't support any kind of shared ship ala Artemis Bridge Simulator, unfortunately. You'd all be in your own, separate ships, but you'd be able to run missions together and such.

We've used both actually. New models use the 3ds Max exporter, but older ones were just upgraded through the UTF ed. I haven't noticed errors with either.

You'd have to detail what's wrong about it because it's been in use with FW for years now without any issue whatsoever.

Yeah, I largely blame Hetzner. Drives should last for way longer than this, but they're probably just slotting in used drives instead of fresh ones. Hopefully the "enterprise" drive is actually enterprise-rated and lasts longer.

w0d already checks SMART, but that won't tell you how far away it is from failing, just when it's already started failing.

Yeah, completely coincidental. This isn't the first time Hetzner's given us a shitty HDD, let's hope this new "enterprise" drive fares better.

Bear in mind that the connection between Cloudflare and the server is not HTTPS, so this is only partially secure, but it's probably the best we'll get.

It's an old site that's basically on life support. If w0d finds a way to jury rig it, sure, but I know Let's Encrypt is more trouble than it's worth for this site.

If you're that worried about it, disable Javascript and never use your account again so you can't get hijacked. We're lucky the thing's still running after all these years, I'm not about to touch it.
