Keyboard mapping
Anonymous-Anonymous
When you first fire up Freelancer you can hit f1 and get an Options Menu.

Go to Controls and you will see a list of the pre-mapped keys in your game. A key aspect to this game is the way your controls are set. Some do use the standard mapping, most do not. Maybe some of you here can also post your mapping controls to give newer people a good look at the way your hand controls work.

Now, everyone maps differently, but I find that the least hand movement I have the better off I am.

This is my mapping:
A, strafe left
B, strafe right
S, reverse
Tab, hud control
R, Cruise Disruptor
Mine, my thumb mouse button
Forward, my roller button on my mouse.
Dead Stop, same button as forward, just press down.

As you can see a mouse with 3-5 buttons is very very useful, so keep that in mind while mapping your controls. The less hand movement you have, the more time you have to think about where you are firing.

I grow up with it years before I had internet when I played Freelancer very lot in SP and with my brother....

A = Strafe left
S = Strafe right
E = Strafe up
D = Strafe down
W = Engine kill
F = minimize HUD
G = Turret view
Q = Tractor beam (all items)
R = Use nanobots
T = Use shieldbots
Space = Afterburn

Mouse 3 = lunch hornet
Mouse 4 = lunch torps
Mouse 5 = lunch mines
Mousewheel = Toggle Mouseview

Sound much but all these buttons are required on NU

Edit: Mouse sensitivy is set to half and i use a wireless opical mouse from logitech.

Ah which brings up another point, the mouse sensitivity control. Some like it really sensitive others do not. You will also find a slider bar for that in the options menu. A good suggestion is to experiment with it.

I believe mine is set to a little less then half.

Also, for this game, I find a corded mouse WAY better then a wireless mouse.

I use the default setup, except I rotated three keys:

Space - Afterburn
R - Freeflight
Tab - Whatever thing R did ;D

However, I think the best thing really is to experiment. If your mouse has more buttons, take advantage of them. If you are good at a FPS game, try to mimmick its control scheme. Whatever suits your style, really.

I should remap my mouse, it'd be a good thing, but I just can't bother

Thats because wired has a faster response time (theres no lag between the connection)

wireless mice (imo) are rubbish for gaming.
