i got an idea as the subject says, for keeping FL alive

what about combining all the fancy effects and all that into 1 mod, showing it off and upload it at youtube??

it would surely keep FL alive a little longer

IMO the problem isn't the source material or what there is to show off, it's how to get people aware of it.

Putting a video on YouTube is all nice and such, but who will actually know it exists? People who visit Freelancer sites; people who already know the game is still alive and kicking. The major issue here is getting people OUTSIDE the current circles to know about the game...

The problem, in my opinion, is not the advertising or the assembly of the mod - but getting people to contribute their work into such a project.
Even with full credit given, and even the assembler willing NOT to take any superior credits for his work, but remain equal with the others, few modders will give their work to such a project, however noble it is at its heart.
I will not go into the why's surrounding this lack of will to contribution (people would feel uncomfortable, start defending themselves and this whole topic would end up out of order), but for example Chips has seen it and he thought he has seen enough, with every right, in my opinion.

Your idea - it is a noble one - but our people won't give a toxic_waste about it. Well, the small modders might, but the "Big" ones? Most of them won't. (= "Wanna steal my work, kid?"

I release all my effects and any code of interest (flak guns) to the public precisely for this reason. Freelancer is fading away, and at this point it really is just counter-productive to keep anything that could be of general use to the community to yourself. If you ever compile such a mod for this video, feel free to use all my effects.

Although perhaps what would be better, would be to have a video compilation of the current state of Freelancer. For example, have active mods contribute about thirty seconds to a minutes worth of footage and compile it all into one video saying "Freelancer is not Dead!" I believe Falcon 4.0 did something similar recently (although I may be entirely wrong), and I thought it was pretty neat to have a community video like that.

Freelancer is fading away

Yes FL is fading away, but it wont die completely (take a look at HL & other modable old games), like most MP playable games it's that side of the community that will die off, eventually (just over a year I reckon) it will be nothing more than a handful of diehards playing on 1 or 2 empty servers.
The SP/OSP only players will still continue to play the game from time to time (I do), and the modding scene will continue for a year or two yet, but because most of you (stupidly) make your mods MP only, guess what?, yep there wont be anybody around who's able to play them.
So while Freelancer will become a "Classic", tomorrow's players will find that there are very few mods that will travel there with it (Evo, TNG & CF probably).

I totally agree with what Why485 has said. And, personally, I do believe will last greater than a year, like you predicted, Bejaymac. The reason for this is that, in my experience, in a mod that isn't related to the FL universe, you receive immense interest by people looking to immerse themselves in the "fantasy" of their choice. I think trying to impose another universe on FL (like SWs, BSG or Star Trek) is one of the fundamental things that will keep this game alive past its dying time. Also, by pushing the engine as far as it can go, with all the new FX, that will attract some new faces that are seeing "pretty things" within this old game.

Also, source code would be great, but I'm not holding my breath...

Fl is a "Classic" , and moaning about who develops what for MP advance the process of fade away FL imo ..

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest, this community is full of sticky fingered bastards.

Talk with the admin here and have them removed from the network bar, you could even see if Crazy & w0dk4 can block their server from the workaround and GLS.

That should bring them out of the woodwork to start discussing things

Since we lost the Global Server we had a big impact in loosing players , but those who remained and newer ones who discover how to connect to MP can find lots of servers and new mods still have the chance to get popularity .

Player counts are not so bad and there is still space for new developments in FL MP .

just an idea:

its still hard for new players to find the threads where its explained how they can connect to FL even if its written on so many forums
wouldnt it be a good idea to include a small instruction is forum registrations telling new players what they have to do or where they can find proper help?
the chances that they read something that appears not to be a standard registration text is good enough

its the most important information that new players need... and the registration process is something they sooner or later will run through

you can divise all your mods, all your instructions in how to getting into MP, but its useless in the long run.
Advertisement can get you freshblood, which is great.but only if you can keep it.

At the moment, and deadly serious, the FL community is seperating into little groups, some go with mod 1,others with mod 2 etc etc.
Fl's community is where we need to concentrate. Have a great community, which sticks together and communicates effectively between the mods will be much more appealing to new freshblood, Atm it looks like a mess, little huddles fighting for survival, why join that?
We need to reunite the different communities under one banner before we try anything effectively.

(Not the way i wished to end my retirement but err, blame it on CoT)

anyway for those which my post made no sense to, we connect the communites of FL together under one united banner, so that FL, can strive far longer then what it will now

I believe you have forgotten what got us into this mess. Everyone WAS under one roof. Then one day the house fell down...and nearly killed Freelancer.

As long as each community supports the others, that can't happen again if one should fall.
