Somebody posted this as a comment on the Freeworlds moddb page, thought it might be interesting:

Could not be so unlikely since they have added other Microsoft Studios games in the meantime.

Depends if they have the source code or not. Didn't we hear a few dozen times that they had somehow lost it somewhere?

If they do re-release on Steam, they'd have to remove copy protection, which is at least easy enough as it's already been done, but most re-releases they've done thus far also come with a bit of up-res, things like supporting widescreen displays, compatibility, etc. They'd need the source for that.

Yeah. I hope this would motivate them to actually search for the source and find it. I cannot believe they literally lost it.

I doubt MS would even try to revive FL. As of late they are making talk of dropping individual Windows in favor of the business packages.

I actually hope this happens, so we can get a dependable OS that doesn't need constant patching. Got todays patch Tuesday with 11 updates.

I do not feel secure with MS any longer. I found a Macrovision (copy protection) update in an update. This is a Hollywood program and was not listed as a Media Player update.

As to the source code, I think DA kept it when MS commandeered FL to bring it to market. The hack adjustments they made to "finalize" it put a lot of holes in the continuity of the game. If they respond at all, it will probably be on their Xbox game systems as something they feel is close to FL.

Another lie on the list; "We're from Microsoft, and we're here to help you"!

There's so much wrong in your post that I don't know where to begin.

No, Microsoft will not be dropping Windows. Whoever told you this is mind-blowingly dumb. Windows is one of MS's cash cows. There's no way in hell they're dropping that, especially not to focus on business when they've been targeting consumers almost exclusively for the past few years. If anything, they risk losing business market share rather than the opposite.

Having OS updates? THAT'S A GOOD THING. Good grief. Updates mean the product is being maintained. Updates mean bugs are getting fixed. No software is defect-free, and Windows is not particularly worse than the alternatives in that regard. When updates stop coming, then you can worry.

Windows Update has been designed, ever since Vista, to support updating third party products. It's not because very little software make use of it that Microsoft is doing Hollywood's bidding all of a sudden. Also, Macrovision also make InstallShield and they have frequent updates of the backend for this.

DA most certainly didn't keep the source for themselves. They became a wholly owned subsidiary of MS, remember? That means they can't hide or keep shit for themselves. The source was absolutely somewhere on Microsoft's network for a while. Moreover, they'd never port the game to Xbox. THAT would be a waste of their time and money. You don't re-release a 10 year-old game on a platform that's never even heard of it.

Um, digital distribution without having to worry about low stocks on the few stores that sell CDs?

I don't quite get why I even have to explain this.
