Check out the official website including crowd-funding here:

One of the most interesting piece of information regarding Freelancer:

Quote:
A central server system for the persistent universe will be required to assure security, prevent cheating and other bad behavior. We also plan to provide a version that allows private servers similar to Freelancer to be maintained and run by the pilot communities. These would support single and multiplayer space combat battles where teams could hone their skills without having to use the public servers.

What do you guys think? Is this worth to be called a potential Freelancer 2?

Freelancer 2? It doesn't seem to have much in common with our freelancer worlds. Their server is the main one, so it puts modders out of work. It seems to be the same 50% cinematic stuff of pure Wing Commander.
But, it will be fun to play.

This video covers the launch in more detail

http://uk.gamespot.com/shows/gamespot ... ustries_gdc_panel20121010

One of the slides about 17 minutes in does list player owned servers, mods and user developed content as part of the game.

The impression I got was that this was a mix of Freelancer and Wing commander with an expanding universe (just like the real thing ) that would be effected to a degree by the players.

Perhaps you need to read beyond the title, as they've clearly said that they allow fully moddable private servers.

I kinda expected this kind of reaction, but please people, I'd rather not this thread be filled with knee-jerking.

Speaking as more of a player than a modder, it looks like it has great potential. The main thing as far as I'm concerned is that if it becomes a reality rather than a dream, it's going to make freelancer look like the old dog that it is.

I'm always sceptical about crowdfunding chances of success though, especially when they're asking for such a huge sum of cash. If I could actually invest a large sum of money for a return, I would be interested, but to just give money away for a usb stick and little ship model to sit on the desk so that some guy can earn 100k + to make 3d models or something irritates me. Where's the incentive to contribute anymore than is necessary to obtain a copy of the game.

P.S - I reckon modders would have to seriously up their game to bring content into a platform with that kind of model and texture quality.

I watched the video and i have to say, that looks like it could be a great game in the making. Dynamic ship handling, dynamic universe, story missions and/or free-roam, great looking graphics.. Lets hope the game play is up to it, in the mean time.. Thumbs up here

I think it will have the Freelancer elements to it, but thinking that this is probably the most challenging and biggest part, they don't have it ready yet so they showed the Wing Commander aspect of the game.

I always wanted to walk on the planets. Not even the planets, just the small area where you land would have been enough, exploring the bars and stuff by yourself. Chris Roberts definitely has that kind of gameplay in mind and it's gonna take a heck of a lot of time to do it.

Looking at the trailer the real question that bothers my mind is proportions. Will the universe and its planets resemble reality or will they be scaled like Freelancer for convenience?

and i hope we all won't get overexcited about this.
the things that were being mentioned a just a little bit too vague in my eyes. Afaik BP has made a lot of promises aswell and we all know where they ended

I want to see PvP and third person mouse + keyboard controls
But nevertheless i think its worth keeping an eye on it.

Personally I think this could be the new reference in Space Sims in the making. Roberts already proved that he knows how to make a game that is actually fun yet deep, and now he has the chance to actually make the game he was dreaming about when making Freelancer. Check the stretch goals. If this hits 5 000 000 $ of funding it will have
- MMO persistent world
- Singleplayer
- Freelancer-style moddable private servers
- Coop/Deathmatch campaign (Wing Commander style)

I think if he doesnt make the stretch goals he will go with the Wing Commander sub-game and will then try to implement the remaining stuff if he gets enough support. I just hope this totally takes off and he manages to get 5 million + funding.. spread the word!

I dont think this will ever have planet landing scale, but I dont think this is important. In fact, this would be over-the-top complicated to do. I know Infinity tries to do this and is pretty successful at it, but Infinity remains to be vaporware as regards being a playable, complicated online-game (its just a tech demo as of now). The devs at Infinity are thinking about a kickstarter at the moment as well and Chris Roberts might just have stolen the show for them. In any way, Roberts just showed that he is a lot more likely to actually deliver a game than the Infinity guys.

Infinity guys have custom engine while Chris uses Crytek, which means that huge part of funding will go to crytek guys instead of game production.

Also Infinity stands for complete MMO space engine rather than actual game which will be more flexible solution.

The carrier in the tech demo has "FL02" on it.

Nice catch

And I'd rather have Roberts work on the actual game rather than optimizing some shaders where the Crytek guys are certainly better at anyways. Im not saying that the Infinity guys are bad or anything like that, Im just saying that Roberts approach is a lot more realistic. Infinity is a great vision and I will certainly back it as well when the day comes they start their Kickstarter. But I wouldnt be surprised if they would still take another 5 years to actually deliver a game that has only the most basic MMO features.

Further, it's worth pointing out that I very much doubt Roberts has gone for the "indie" funding option where around a quarter of the income goes to Crytek. Chances are they've got a more serious agreement which involves a much lower percentage.

Plus, as w0d said, it's basically paying Crytek to do what they're excellent at instead of paying in-house programmers to replicate the same functionality.

But.... Anyway, we will have new stuff to wait and play. So my opinion... don't worry too much about it's Crytek or not.
