I played freelance as it came out and only the single player. Now I want to play it again with windows 7 and maybe some mods, but therere are a lot and i have no clue wich working in singleplayer and are good, also i have 1680x1050 tft now. I would be gratful for some tips what to try out.

I recommend you to play Online, it's more funnier.
 The most Server already included a Widescreenfix in their mods.

About widescreen, yes, many server's mod bring widescreen support. But you also can use this tutorial to set up widescreen on your vanilla freelancer. And yes, online freelancer is another world, you have to test it
