Hi all.

Is there any chance someone downloaded the pack and more specifically, the ships when MegaUpload was still online?
I might be able to to use the designs for another game, but it appears the designs are gone from my computer.

If someone would be so kind to share the ship designs once more so I can pick them up again, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for the kind words, Bob. But after a long hard think I have decided to pull back from the project. I still haven't heard from Akira (although he will probably have his reasons), and to be frank there is not much point in continuing to work on a project which is constantly targeted by people who want to see it fail.
Like you said, it is quite disheartening. And frankly, I have better things to do with my limited time. It's sad but it's the way it is.
I have had more negative experiences in the Freelancer world and although I am not going to address them here, I have made a decision to draw the line here and move on to other things.

I have made a post in which I offer a couple of things of which I hope may be of help to others though. You can read it here. If you are interested in some of it, leave a reply there and I'll get back to you.

Hi guys

As I mentioned in the Legacy topic, I am leaving Freelancer behind, and have a few things which I think might be useful for others and I would like to offer to anyone who sees a good use for it.

1)
First, I would like to offer the complete Legacy forum board.
The board is hosted on forumotion.com, one of the better free forum providers.
It has been completely set up, it has a portal with an HTML introduction module on top, a news module reading posts from the news forum, sections and subsection and correct permissions, a gallery, custom modules and more. There are even a few credits left to spend on additional features, which I purchased but never got around to spending.
I have also done extensive graphical work on it to enhance its appearance.
All in all the board is ready to go as a free mod community board.

Whoever becomes the new owner will receive the admin login details, all the forum backups (last one made just an hour ago), and all the graphical work I've done in a backup .rar file.
You will also receive the original confirmation email that I received when I started the board, in case you need to recover a password.
Also, I will give you the login details of the email account that is used for the admin account on the forum.
I you become the new owner, please be kind enough to change the url to something else than 'freelancer-legacy'. I also suggest you change the admin password.

Please note that I can only give away the forum once. So if you're interested, please send me a pm briefly motivating why you want to use the board, and some information regarding your mod/server. Personally, I would prefer to help out a modding team who is just starting.
If there are several people who are interested, I will select who gets it. If there is only one, the choice will be easy.
If I receive no requests within 30 days, the board will be deleted.

2)
Second, I put some mod stuff I made together into one download which I called "Mav's pack".
Anyone who uses (part of) this pack is free to do whatever they want with it. Please don't hesitate to change anything you want; textures, HP's, meshes, graphics, etc. If you download it, it's yours.

I would appreciate it if you mentioned my name somewhere if you decide to use some of it, but if you don't I really won't be bothered either. I find it more important that the stuff can be enjoyed by players.
Up to you.

The pack contains the following:

  • My black&silver HUD with 50% opacity on all frames.
This contains an INTERFACE folder which you can simply put in your game files. I had the animation speeds of the HUD elements increased, but this was a hex edit. So you would need to edit this yourself.
  • A billboard base model WIP.
This was my first attempt on designing a base which had a big rotating billboard on top (or on the bottom if you turn it upside down). The model consists out of several parts and is a WIP, so there's just a couple of 3dsMax files. You need to do the rest yourself.
  • A couple of ships:
    • Lightship.
This is a ship I designed for admins and is an extremely simple design. It's basically just a tiny model small enough to not be noticed, with a lot of custom lights and the blhazard_effect on it. It doesn't even have a texture and it doesn't need one since all you see is a giant ball of light.
This ship comes with the following files:
      • 3dsMax model
      • light_equip.ini entry lines for the custom lights
      • goods.ini entry lines for the lights and the effect on the model
      • MS3D file
      • OBJ and MTL files
      • SHIPS folder which contains the .obj, .mat and .sur files (ship has been properly hardpointed)
      • textures (not much to it)
      • UV maps
    • Ventru ship.
I have shown renders of this ship before HERE. A lot of work has gone into it, and up till now the ship has not been flown by players yet. It would make me very happy if it would.
This ship comes in 2 versions: an admin version and a civilian version. The download comes with the following files:
      • several 3dsMax models for both versions and one with a cockpit interior
      • MS3D files for both ships
      • OBJ and MTL files for both ships
      • SHIPS folder which contains the .obj, .mat and .sur files for both ships (ships have been properly hardpointed)
      • all textures for both ships (both .DDS and .PSD files)
      • UV maps for both ships
    • 'Racer' ship.
This is a ship which was never meant to be a serious ship for in game use, but was more of a test for myself to see if I could design a simple ship with as few poly's as possible, while still have it look decent in game. In the end I think it turned out to be a decent looking ship, and its appearance made me think about a ship dedicated for racing. It only has about 300 poly's and the textures are nothing more than a red and a white pallet. With a decent texture it might be a useful ship.
If you download it, you receive the following files:
      • several 3dsMax models
      • MS3D file
      • OBJ and MTL files
      • SHIPS folder which contains the .obj, .mat and .sur files (ship has been properly hardpointed)
      • textures (like I said, not much to it) (both .DDS and .PSD files)
      • UV maps

      Download links:

You can download the pack as separate items, or everything at once as one larger download (33Mb).
      • Separate items:
      • The complete pack:

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'd be happy to answer them. If not, I hope you enjoy the content and can find a way to put it to good use.

        All the best,
        ~ Mav.

I am angry and disappointed to announce that all work on the Legacy mod has sadly been suspended until further notice.
The reasons are as follows.

It has been well over a week since I heard from my partner Akira. The server has been offline since, and I was unable to connect remotely during that time. It was only just now that Akira was able to let me know why.
It seems that certain people have made his IP address a target for a flood of attacks. This has affected the server box and Akira his other personal hardware to a level where serious security risks outweigh the fun we had in doing the project. It also made working on it near impossible.

Akira also depends on his hardware for work he does for (paying) clients, and it is not worth risking losing all this over a game.
I fully back his view in this, and share his opinion that it's not worth to risk damaging our hardware over a modification of a game which we do for fun, for free and in our spare time.

So until further notice, we see no other option than to suspend the project.

It is worth mentioning that ever since we started the project, I have had the impression that certain people did not want our project to succeed. I have no proof what so ever whether these same people are responsible for the attacks, nor do I have the technological means or knowledge to find out either way, but it is all a little bit too coincidental for my taste.

Either way, I find it deeply sad that some people lower themselves to low level practices like this, and try to sabotage a project that is done by two people in their free time, for the love of a game and to nobody's expense.

If the situation does not change, this decision might become final. If it does, I will offer the Legacy forum board and any mod content we had prepared to anyone who sees a good purpose for it.
If it comes to that, I'll let you know.

Discussions like this have been held many times over on lots of forums, but still it remains an interesting subject if you ask me.

Personally, I still regularly scout Youtube and Google for news about a Freelancer successor, but up till this point, without any result I'm afraid. Even though I have heard people saying there is not going to be a Freelancer 2, personally I'm still looking forward to the day when I run into an article that mentions the possibility of a successor of Freelancer.

There have been notes in the recent past about a Freelancer 2 though. The few vids on youtube that you can find look really promising, but, but the project was canceled. (Anyone knows why?)

Here's a vid:

There have been quite a few attempts to create similar games though. For example Black Prophecy.

Here's the trailer:

When I first heard word about this game, I got excited and enlisted for the Beta team, and tested the game for a while. But to my disappointment, the introduction stories like 'inspired by Freelancer', 'featuring amazing graphics while still being playable on low-spec computers', etc were not exactly what you thought they would be. It may be inspired by Freelancer, but a Freelancer fan will see more differences than similarities. Personally I was disappointed in the gameplay (the Freelancer gameplay is still unbeaten if you ask me) and the fact that I could only run the game with all settings set to lowest... And even though I don't have the highest spec computer around (AMD Athlon Dual Core 4450, 3GB RAM and an NVidia GeForce GT 220) it made me wonder what kind of specs you needed to play the game with all settings set to full. For me, a disappointment in the end.

Just today I stumbled on this vid through a topic from Helloween:

Looks brilliant doesn't it? I thought that this was footage from the game Conquest: Frontier Wars 2, but I was sadly mistaken.
Reading the comments below the vid, it was obviously footage from a game that was canceled due to the company going bankrupt. How sad, because I think the vid looks awesome.

Will there ever be a Freelancer 2? I certainly hope so, and I'm sure a lot of other people with me. With today's possibilities it would look no less than awesome. Fact is though that as it stands now, what comes closest to a successor to Freelancer is some of the modifications that are made today.

Can we still hope for a real Freelancer 2? Or depends the future of our beloved game on the mods and nothing else.

Discuss!

Just for the fun of it you should have a browse through all the addresses in the resources.dll. There's lots there you can change that may give your mod a bit of its own feel to it.

That stuff is awesome guys, just like the other work you have done. The things you have done to the game make your mod so much more than just a simple modification; one might rather speak of Freelancer 2 in my opinion.
When the mod is ready I'm definitely gonna play it to enjoy all that awesomeness.

Thank you for all the hard work you lot are doing to prolong the lifespan of Freelancer.
Big huge thumbs up for you guys!

Here's a quote from the readme of the Ambient Explosion System which is part of Why485's Big Huge Effects Pack:

Quote:
The basic idea is this. Every AI ship carries a dummy gun. The AI will see a target, and open fire on it. When it does, the dummy gun will fire a missile that has a short lifespan such that it explodes as it leaves the barrel. The explosion then creates debris similar to the debris that is created when a fighter or capital ship normally explodes. This debris is spawned at a preset distance, and then explodes. When it explodes, you see the ambient explosion.

Maybe that is something you can use?

I'm pretty sure SDK left a couple of (b)ini's unchanged, and they were definitely vanilla, since I ran SDK on the vanilla game. Couldn't tell you which files though, can't remember.
If you want to know which files they were, I could run SDK again on a vanilla copy.

The readme files of a lot of Bini editors refer to it as 'encrypted'. But you might as well call it scrambled, unworkable, or hocus-pocus lol. I'm not much one with a lot of knowledge for technical terms, and tbh I don't really care either. Just want them to work.

The Bini edit program worked a charm, thanks again M1C.

I tried the SDK but it leaves some ini's unchanged. I will have a go at that list of Bini editors. Thanks for the tip.
