New Normal and Specular Maps Freelancer Mod News
Posted by Sushi on 2011/6/3 20:05:41 (5449 reads)

It's nice to take a breather from doing monkey work every once in awhile to do something more interesting, when you're a modder. For me, I'm doing something I always wanted to do for the mod but haven't had the knowledge or time to do before. So, while the testers are hard at work putting Freeworlds: Tides of War's universe map through heavy testing, I've had some time to learn how to create some neat new things for the mod.

As some of you that have been following us for some time may know, we introduced normal and specular mapping in the early part of this year. Now, for those that aren't as computer savvy as other, what this means is that we can get incredibly detailed models without losing performance. We do this through textures. Here's an example of what a normal map and specular (...)

Freeworlds: Tides of War Month in Review Freelancer Mod News
Posted by Sushi on 2011/5/26 7:21:06 (4928 reads)

Development Summary:

"Incredible!" would be the word I describe the work done in the past month of Freeworlds: Tides of War. Never before in the history of the mod has so much been accomplished with several developers putting more than 40 hours per week for the last month. While not all of this is pretty eye candy for us to show off here, all of it brings us much closer to bring this creative and innovative mod closer to your computers.

First off, though, I'll start off with something that will get your attetion. We were fortunate enough to get two new model designs and textures into game. Both the K-Wing and Strike Cruiser were badly needing a revamp. I set Sizer on the task to create the (...)

Broken Bonds development competition #1: Contraband Freelancer Mod News
Posted by BrokenBonds on 2011/5/17 17:32:38 (3577 reads)

As a part of an initiative to make the construction of the Broken Bonds mod more interactive, the development team is going to start running competitions, in which followers and future players can suggest ideas for use. The rewards for suggesting a winning option (besides seeing your own ideas released) will vary between competitions, but a typical prize would be a fully outfitted fighter or freighter of the player's choice. Of course, certain ships would be restricted - we can't have people waltzing around in Admin ships, after all!

Today, we're looking for suggestions (...)

Freeworlds: Tides of War - Closed Beta Release Announcement Freelancer Mod News
Posted by Sushi on 2011/4/2 12:45:28 (5655 reads)

Over the past few weeks you all have been seeing the wonderful work that has been done to our models/textures. I can now say that all our ship models are complete and only a few ship textures to remain for our entire 107 ships. This is quite an astonishing feat and I have to thank all our model and texture artists for the incredible work they’ve done over the 2 ½ years. You’ll find some of our most recent work below:

Freeworlds: Tides of War - Imperial Star Destroyer Normal Map and other eye candy! Freelancer Mod News
Posted by Sushi on 2011/2/26 3:00:00 (5693 reads)

Hey guys, we're trying to be a little more frequent with news posts than we've been for the last few months as we think it is very important to keep everyone updated on the progress we're making. The time it takes is negligible compared to the enjoyment you guys get out of it!

You've probably noticed the slew of what can only be qualified as "ship pr0n" that we've released in the past few days. I can assure you this just the beginning. Thanks to w0dk4's latest magic trick, normal mapping is now enabled throughout the game. As such, we are in the process of creating normal maps for all existing models, be they ships, bases or (yes) planets. We have great plans for the latter, actually (...)

Freeworlds: Tides of War - Normal and Specular Mapping Freelancer Mod News
Posted by w0dk4 on 2011/2/10 16:00:44 (3063 reads)

Welcome back to another Freeworlds: Tides of War update. "Finally!" you might say. We have indeed been very low on developer activity over the last couple of weeks (or even months). Nevertheless, we are still working on the mod and we are committed to actually releasing it. So dont worry, we are here to stay.

For those who have been brave enough to follow us, be prepared for some more eye-candy: We recently got Normal and specular mapping working! Now, being a gamer that keeps up with the industry you might not be impressed at all. However, we are talking about a now 8-years old game engine based on Direct3D8. This and deferred rendering have been huge steps towards bringing the Freelancer engine to current state-of-the-art graphic levels.

On the technical side, implementing normal mapping was really no easy (...)

EveLancer Freelancer Mod News
Posted by lonestar on 2010/12/28 15:14:34 (5585 reads)

Well for one Evelancer is the meeting of two great games into one world, well one universe. It takes the Microsoft game Freelancer and removes all from it and then adds all four main races from Eve-online including there ships, weapons, and hopefully there military. There will also be the sleepers and rouge drones acting as the part of the Nomands, including the Jove empire but like Eve will be close to player interactions.

For more information and pictures please feel free to goto the Web Site I have setup for the mod on Freelancer Community site.

If you enjoyed the first mod, then this will be an even better experience! With WoTF2, I intend to build upon the work in the previous mod, but include a stronger storyline and voice actors besides myself (insert Peter Sellers joke).

Planned Features

  • 13 Action Packed Missions

  • More competitive AI

  • More voice acting, better script

Freeworlds: Tides of War - Ship Teaser Freelancer Mod News
Posted by Sushi on 2010/12/12 5:39:53 (3523 reads)

Over the past few weeks you've seen that the Freelancer engine still has a few years of life in her with the new graphic updates we hope to bring to the game with DX9. W0dk4 is still very much busy pushing the limits of the engine and is at the moment working on normal maps and possible shadow mapping. This is no easy process, particularly without the source code of Freelancer. FriendlyFire recently took a screenshot showing the new effects in action in a battle!
