Triggering something upon death

I've recently began running a Discovery 4.86 server and there's an idea that I've had on the table for a while but unfortunately I don't have enough technical knowledge to pull it off. I've been researching it for a while and even after searching the information here I've been unable to find anything.

Is there a way to trigger an event when a players ship is destroyed? My idea is to have the ability to "destroy" a players ship when it gets defeated in space, basically giving them a different (much more basic) ship. The first idea I had was to somehow trigger a specific /restart. If I were to do it this way I would also be interested in figuring out how to do selective restarts based on currently equipped IDs.

I guess the bottom line is I'm wondering if there's a way to change a players ship if they get destroyed. That would satisfy my basic need but anything more than that would be great too. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

I know some mods do it, so there is probably a plugin out there.

If anyone knows where to get a plugin please let me know. If any of you other admins out there run it on your mod I would appreciate any plugins or source code for plugins you might have.
