Information
Edinburgh is the only binary star system in Bretonia space, only recently discovered because of its obscured location beyond the Skye planetary nova. The one habitable planet was named Gaia by its discoverers in memory of the lost paradise of Earth. It is a lush, primeval planet that supports a wide variety of large mammal and reptile species, the first of its kind discovered within the boundaries of the colonies. When the planet was initially surveyed by a research team from Cambridge University, they urged the Bretonian government to declare the entire Edinburgh system a Class 2 preserve with no permanent human settlement allowed and visitors strictly regulated.
But Gaia also contained reserves of cobalt that interested BMM, and potentially a tourism bonanza for Orbital Spa and Cruise. Soon the academics' concerns were pushed aside in the name of short-term profit. The cruise ship Shetland established orbit around Gaia within two months of the researchers' departure, quickly becoming the top tourist attraction in the Sirius Sector. Back on Cambridge, the frustrated scientists found a more receptive audience. Financed by sympathetic landowners and professors, they were able to recruit legions of idealistic young students to fight the cause. Calling themselves the Gaians, they swore to protect the planet and its system at all costs, so that it would not suffer the same fate as Leeds. The eco-terrorist movement had begun.
Establishing their base inside an ice crystal cloud near Gaia, they have become a serious threat to terraforming and mining operations throughout Bretonia. The Outcasts are also present in the system, using it as a transit point for their drug smugglers bound for New London and Liberty.
