Star Citizen funded, breaking crowdfunding record! Star Citizen News

Star Citizen, the crowdfunding space-sim project by Chris Roberts (creator of Freelancer and Wing Commander), has been successfully funded.

Also, the project established a new crowdfunding record for video game projects with nearly 7 Million Dollars!

The team about Roberts has been very active in communicating with the community during the campaign, giving information about the game mechanics as well as showing off - surely a factor for breaking the crowdfunding record. But they also promised in their pledge statement to keep the updates coming.

One of the most interesting piece of information regarding Freelancer:

A central server system for the persistent universe will be required to assure security, prevent cheating and other bad behavior. We also plan to provide a version that allows private servers similar to Freelancer to be maintained and run by the pilot communities. These would support single and multiplayer space combat battles where teams could hone their skills without having to use the public servers.

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.
