Current Patch Order Etc

Hey, so as part of my projects I need the most up to date, non-conflicting INI sources possible at this time of writing.

I am unaware of JFLP patch contains full replacement of all INIs or just the appropriate ones, it seems like it expands the work of Quickfix, Quickfix itself supersedes all the SDK packs.

So based on that evidence is it seems prudent to apply 1.1 patch, then Quickfix, then JFLP, is that the current patch order? Or does JFLP cover all of Quickfix and then it's own additions?

I also note that in the JFLP readme, it includes a part about not being compatible with those without it, and instructions to un-do that change, I think I will do this so it remains compatible, but I have one remaining question about that.

Is vertical strafing still considered taboo? I read through most of that thread and it was basically considered cheating, is that still so?

What patch are most mods based on these days?

TL-DR:

  • What is the current patch order from Vanilla?

  • In JFLP there are notes about changing entries to prevent crashes, is this still an issue these days or should I follow these instructions to maintain compatibility?

  • Is vertical strafing still considered cheating?

  • What patches are most mods these days based upon?

Regarding Adoxa's patch, I applied it first, but not the entire thing. I simply picked what elements I wanted from it then built those components into a DLL (with Adoxa's help since I had no idea what I'm doing).

Vertical strafing is only cheating on servers that state such and don't use it. Many mods currently have it implemented because it's a useful feature. The only one I could point you to is Discovery, however, as I've not used others that extensively.

Most mods have been fleshed out to the point where the original point can't be seen. Many mods like Freeworlds and Discovery simply created their own "patches" rather than using others.

I for one have used community assets and mixed and matched them around the place to create a nice blend of features, while still retaining a Vanilla "feel".

I suppose what I'm really asking is does JFLP cover every INI? or is there some missing. Because that will answer the question of if I apply Quickfix first and then JFLP?

A cursory glance at the archive would tell you all that:

Quote:
This is a patch to correct many things in the original game. It builds on the work of Louva-Deus (the SDK/QuickFix) and Buck Danny (the Unofficial FL SP 1.4 patch). Only the changes I have made are described; changes made by SDK 1.3 are not described (but those from 1.5b15 are); changes made by Buck Danny are described in "Patch description 1.40.txt" (or .doc) - please read that before continuing.

All of the additional changes done by the JFLP are listed in the readme.

That statement implies he used Quickfix as a base for his own work, and then applied his changes. Maybe it was just my tired eyes at the time, but just looking for confirmation, if that's the case there should be no left over BINI encrypted files, correct?

I can just apply JFLP and be golden.

Is this is meant to be a patch for new players before installing a mod?

If it is, I should point out that Discovery has a very strict anticheat and installing it over anything other than an unpatched vanilla install will almost certainly be flagged as cheating if the files differ even slightly. That being said, we have been incorporating fixes from patches like JFLP and others like vertical strafing. Texture packs are really the only mods that work on Discovery and even then we get people setting off the anticheat.

I presume the above probably applies to other mods like Crossfire and Freeworlds.

This is meant to be a one-stop patch to play vanilla. Mods will have their own instructions, so it'd be irrelevant to them.

JFLP covers all of Quickfix, and unpacks all inis.

The robot traders were using people animations, causing lots of spew warnings, so I changed them. However, the server sends the character to the client, so JFLP servers would send robot characters to non-JFLP clients with people characters, and crash the client. So a server should go back to the people animations or tells its clients to use JFLP, too.

Thanks for the clarification Adoxa!

Much appreciated, my current issues in solving this one patch to fix all Freelancer clients issue however, is the Widescreen Crashes thread, if you have seen it - do you have any ideas?

No, I was waiting for the result of additional testing before commenting (offhand I can't see why HudShift would crash, since the only code it changes is to hook the resolution change and it is actually JFLP that does all the widescreen stuff).

Adoxa,

As you're aware, we use the JFLP on our server and in our mod but we advertise as being 100% vanilla compatible in that you do not need the mod or the JFLP in order to play on FLU.

We've been this way for years. I've not heard any significant number of complaints from vanilla players that they're crashing. If this is an issue it's news to me.
