Hello all

Lets be honest about all this, There will never be a Freelancer 2 or a form of remake from the developers of the original game!

So instead of us all sitting here waiting for nothing to come why has no one here on the forum of people who have the most experience in the game and the people with the most knowledge of coding and editing it, decided to join forces in some way and create a game?

This absolutely bemuses me!

Now this post is only for the Coders, 3d artists and software developers out there not the i can do this or do that people.

Now im not a great developer i have never claimed to be but what i do claim to be is a great organiser and project leader, so guys tell me the facts, can this be done? how much would it cost as funds can be gathered and who would like to help produce and work on this?

Some of you out there have really really made major advances to the current FL game so put this all together and there is a team out there which can do something amazing!

Discuss this and let me know what you think as i think if we all put our heads to it then we can create something that would work and would be appealing to the people who love the game and style that it represents.

To put simple i can fund a server for all files to be worked on (not for the game to be played but a open platform for developers) a website and some of the funding to make it a reality as well as i can find other people to fund the project and possibly if i speak to a friend a game engine for it to be built on.

I would have to be honest not so many online i have been part of some mods ect currently Ds9 but as part of my real world job this is what i do, its just about putting into practice everything i have learnt and done over the years into use on something that could be done.

Im not even saying that i would be such thing if it would go ahead im just trying to ignite a spark in the community to pull people together to do this, even if im not eventually a part of it i would like to say i helped bring a team of people together who could do it.

not sure there are high experienced game developers around that can/want to spend their hours for free. also I dont trust to seperate dev servers that I cant see with my eyes due to my life experience.

that is why a licence is created between the devs and also we are talking about a funded project, this is all just discussing it, IE if we can get funding will people put there time in to do it or even what would it cost for things to start

Pick holes in it?

Err. This isn't how business works, sorry. What you do is plan out things like funding, scope, features, gameplay, team arrangement, required software, etc. before you start. Otherwise, all you end up with is broken promises, shattered egos and wasted time and money for everyone involved.

You can't just barge in and say "hey guys I have no idea how to make a game but let's do one anyway!". If it were, everyone and their dog would be making games.

Think you have the wrong end of the stick..

Im talking about doing all this as well, as in i have not got a idea ect how to start why dosnt the community get together and work on ideas then build up what they want in such a game and go from there. Yes its a long old process but thats the point. Sorry if i seemed angry or something was not trying to get across like that.

Now if a team got together then looked at all these issues and worked things out on what a plan should be then that is what could be done. Im not saying to get coding ect straight away as i no these things take alot of development time and that is what im asking. Would a team be prepared to get together to even talk about this, could it be done can people do it and can we all work through the issues that arise when doing such a task

To be honest, a project like that is too big in scope for a any bunch of people that work on it in their free time.

If you are talking about dedicated game devs.. yeah sure. The problem is, we dont really have dedicated, bored game devs around here that could commit the necessary amount of time

Your best bet is still a new engine that supports existing FL assets, which the community can then convert.

There are a few engine-remakes in progress (Galaxy Empire by Lance Solorus, the tech demo by massdriver, Why's stuff in Unity, maybe Cannon is also working on something, etc..).

Personally, I think one of the best things would be a single patch for FL (i.e. what we're doing with Freeworlds graphics-wise, and Discovery gameplay-wise like dynamic bases).

Of course a new engine would be great, but it will take an absurd amount of time and energy to replicate FL completely.

now you see that looks awsome! then lets look at it that way, no making new engines what could be done with what the community has currently produced ?
