Yep - open system chat (Y) and talk to a couple of players first before you launch.

Or go on a quiet server and build up your skills money and courage, and then choose a server and mod you fancy.

Take a long-term view, you will probably be playing for a couple of years once you start!

So... if you're hooked up, get ready for cold dinners, dinners in the dog, long separations, the kids (if you have them) growing up and looking different, and who knows, maybe a divorce! lol

Have a look at the Zip I've attached it covers a lot of FL modding topics but around page 44 Giskards system building from scratch is a good start for someone new to modding (it was for me!)

Hi to everyone at the Starport, have been playing space sims since the early days of Elite (on the bbc), many moons ago progressing through all the WingCommander series (on the Amiga) up to the not so present Freelancer on the pc, guess you could say I am hooked lol, maybe one day someone might create a space sim combining the features of Freelancer and Borderlands?..

Hello, my nic is Ursus. I have been playing Freelancer on a casual basis (SP campaign and some post-campaign stuff) for a few years, and have been playing on the Discovery 24/7 server for about a year. I like analyzing the mechanics of multiplayer games, and also enjoy space sims in general (have been playing them since Sierra Space-Quest). I'm not a C++ programmer or model designer or anything like that, I just enjoy thinking about this stuff. Right now I'm trying to learn a little more about the inner workings of the game, and it seems this is the place for that discussion. Thanks for providing the resource.

Hi Freelancers everywhere,

For those of you who may be enjoying the excellent Rebalance Mod 3.56, you may have encountered the frustratingly annoying mission failure "You fled the battle area" when trying to defend Pueblo station (mission #2). arrrggh!! > Well no more.

Here are my mission 2.ini file corrections for that all non-programmers and FL addicts alike can do.
dont forget to backup a copy on your desktop!!!(as if you wouldnt)

Your fantastic mod has been enjoyed by so many, I'd thought I could give back by trying to help others resolve the "you fled battle area" bug during the defending of Pueblo station mission.
User RyunosukeKnT posted a possible fix on the forum but I couldn't find the trigger [Trigger]nickname=ashcroft_timer_fail system=Li03 Cnd_Timer=600 (note that this number was 60) Act_ChangeState=FAIL,22360 he was refering to, so I did some edit-test-trialling of my own.

If its alright with you I'd like to post what changes I made to the Mission 2.ini file to correct it, to the forum so others can continue to enjoy your mod!
Here were my adjustments....

find the following files...
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\data\DATA\Missions\M02 (.ini)
and
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\exe\DATA\Missions\M02 (.ini)

Right click each, open with....Notepad.
In both scroll down and find the following triggers and edit the following changes (highlighted in bold green);

[Trigger]
nickname = dst_trig
system = Li03
Cnd_DistVec = inside, Player, 6311, 600, 81989, 2000
Act_ActTrig = king_scanned

[Trigger]
nickname = begin_checker
system = Li03
Cnd_CommComplete = DX_m02_0290_KING

Last night I was planning to just check out a couple missions and go back to Minecraft, but I wound up playing until dawn, screwing any chance of accomplishing anything outside today. I don't think I've gotten this wrapped up in a space-themed game since Homeworld. The controls... my god, the controls. They're so effing good.

Thanks for the warm welcome, gang! I've already taken my first steps into Freelancer, and I must admit.. it's quite fun. Commands are responsive, and the action is pretty intense. I'm looking forward to getting a little more experience under my belt, and then seeing all of you in game!

You are right about the lack of good scifi games, although there are tons of outstanding-good-looking games out there, they fall severely short when it comes to game depth and replayability.
